Campbell Gillies Memorial Ball

Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool

Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool

This event was in memory of Campbell Gillies, an up-and-coming jockey who tragically died whilst on holiday last year. Although a sad affair, Campbell’s friends and family who organised the event wanted it to be an occasion of celebration as Campbell liked nothing better than to enjoy himself. And all proceeds from the evening were donated to the Injured Jockey’s Fund.

We kept hearing how much Campbell loved a great night out so we really wanted to bring the party to this one and make sure people remembered the night as it should be – awesome. It was a big do at Aintree racecourse – around 400 people in total. Lots of folks to squeeze onto that dance-floor!

A young chap by the name of Mark Boylan started the night off with an acoustic set, and he sang a song with a friend he’d written for Campbell which got a huge cheer from everyone in the venue, it was a great moment. Then there was a charity auction which raised over £15,000 the last time I heard. I think it’s safe to say the organisers did extremely well.

Then it was time for the band, and everyone was a bit nervous about playing I think! But true to form, the guests rushed onto the dance-floor to party the night away. Here’s the first picture out of my camera:

A few songs in and we started to see the dance-floor packed to the brim, as pointed out by one guest!

A few tears were shed I believe, but on the whole I think everyone had a great night. And the memory of Campbell will be even stronger for it.

The final picture taken was of everyone in the venue squeezed onto the dance-floor, it was great to see. The atmosphere was brilliant.

We can only hope we did justice to Campbell’s memory. Knowing he was a bit of a party-animal really spurred us on. But of course, the entire event was for Campbell, his friends and family, and the Injured Jockey’s Fund. If they raised as much money as we heard, and partied the night away in memory of Campbell as they wanted to, then our small contribution to that makes us glad to be a part of it.

Here’s to Campbell.
